For 2023 we have chosen to support The Island, a youth charity in York.

The Island is a York-based youth charity. It provides mentoring programmes for local children and young people experiencing challenges with their mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

Through recreational activity, The Island’s fully trained volunteer mentors look to work with children and young people to help raise their confidence, self-esteem and resilience levels so that they can take positive steps forward. This work is done either through one-to-one support or through group-based provisions with each programme offering long-term, sustainable support to meet their needs.

Sometimes, children and young do require additional support which is why in recent years The Island has launched a foodbank, counselling and tutoring programme. These additional services enable The Island to achieve their objectives which are to help children and young people to thrive despite their current circumstances.

Children and young people that The Island commonly work with include those who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence within the home, live in food poverty despite living in a working house, children with visible and invisible disabilities and differences, young carers, children experiencing bullying either on or offline, those displaying early signs of mental ill health and more.
