What makes a happy retirement

Royal London have recently done some research among over 55s as to what their key focus might be for a happy retirement.

What did it show…

72% were more interested in experiences rather than material possessions such as houses, cars and latest digital equipment. Over 52% of those surveyed said the spending time with family was the most important.

It may also be surprising to see that a majority of people said they had still to achieve their life goals.
The pandemic and the cost of living crisis have also affected people’s retirement plans too. Almost a third have had to make changes to their original retirement plans.

Taking on part-time work to fund exciting new experiences is also an option for a happy retirement. Around six in ten (58%) said they would consider working in retirement. Two in five (40%) decided they would work if it enabled them to do more things they enjoyed.

The biggest concerns people have in retirement are staying fit and healthy. This was followed by having enough money to follow the lifestyle they have planned.

In reality none of this may come as a surprise to many, particularly if you are in this demographic or approaching it.

A pension is a long-term investment. Your eventual income may depend on the size of fund when accessed, interest rates and legislation. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down.
